Lithuania has strengthened its ties with Taiwan and is keen to establish direct flights and tour packages between the two countries. Lithuanian tourism office director Dalius Morkvenas said at the Taipei International Travel Fair on Monday.

The two countries are in the process of establishing representative offices in their respective capitals and Lithuania is hosting a Taiwanese representative office. It is the first European country not to use “Taipei” in the Taiwan representative office.

Morkvenas says tourism is an important way to build friendships between different countries, and he hopes to make it easier for Lithuanians to travel to Taiwan.

Morkvenas spoke with Deputy Director General of Taiwan Tourism Bureau Lin Hsin-jen via video conference at the fair. Lin says welcoming the Lithuanian people is a priority, especially since the two countries share similar values in terms of freedom and democracy.

Lin and Morkvenas both agreed that it was important for Taiwan and Lithuania to find ways to share their history and culture. Lin added that Taiwan and Japan have already established a solid path for cultural exchange, and he hopes Taiwan can build one with Lithuania as well.
