A 17-year-old student from EB Magalona won second place, out of 18 entrants representing various local government units around Negros Occidental, in the province-wide tour guide competition held at the Mall Ayala Capitol Central on September 21, as part of the ongoing 22nd Provincial Tourism Week.

Lauren Joy Palabrica, a native of Barangay 2, and Grade 11 STEM student from EB Magalona National Secondary School (EBMNHS), received a cash prize of P6,000, plaque and certificate from the Negros Occidental Tourism Division , organizer of the Provincial Tourism Week.

Palabrica and her coach, Raffy Berina, Professor of Contemporary Art and English at EBMNHS, also previously received cash assistance of 6,000 pesos from the municipal government of EB Magalona as a stipend for the competition, said Ma. Teresa Alvarez, designated municipal tourism officer.

Mayor Marvin Malacon congratulated the young winner saying, “You embody the talent and ideals of the young people of EB Magalona who passionately seek excellence in their profession. May your victory inspire our young people to dream big and bring honor to our municipality.

Palabrica is a member of Teatro Laragway, the theater company of the EBMNHS, which also has Berina as an advisor. Last year, Teatro Laragway won 13 awards at the National Theater Festival for the play “Can you see my screen?”

“I was motivated to win not only for myself, but for the people behind it all – for Teatro Laragway and for EB Magalona. It’s a great honor to represent my hometown,” Palabrica said in a statement. *
